Valentina Favarò’s book analyses the career of a Neapolitan nobleman – Carmine Nicola Caracciolo, Prince of Santobuono – connecting his individual life with the wider political framework of the Spanish Monarchy. The reconstruction of his biography – between the Italian peninsula, Spain and Peru – allows to deal with some particularly important issues in a phase of political transition experienced by the Spanish Monarchy between the kingdoms of Charles II of Habsburg and Philip V of Bourbon: the dilemma of loyalty in times of dynastic change; the family and factional strategies to obtain honorary titles; the practices of negotiation enacted to build and strengthen networks of power.
